Breakdown of sessions
First session: Intake session
In this session we will explore you and your partner’s background history. We’ll look at the highs and lows of the relationship and set some tentative goals.
Second and Third sessions: Individual sessions.
These individual sessions will be with each partner seeing the therapist separately. You will cover more of your personal history and any individual concerns you’d like to discuss.
Fourth session: Feedback Session or Mapping Your Cycle
In this fourth session, this will depend on your therapist and the approach they use. If your therapist is using Prepare/Enrich or Gottman Method Couples Therapy, you will go over the results from your assessment and come up with a plan to meet your goals. If your therapist is using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), you will begin to map out your interactional cycle.
Couples Therapy Approaches:
Gottman Method: The Gottman method uses many evidenced based interventions to strengthen relationships. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship. Using the Gottman Method, your therapist will guide you through building your Sound Relationship House, which walks you through the nine elements of a healthy relationship based on years of research.
Our therapists may incorporate part or all of these approaches based on your specific needs. If you would like to request a certain approach, please specify in your inquiry so that you can be matched with the appropriate therapist. No matter which approach you feel is best for your relationship, couples counseling can help you achieve:
Deeper connection
Better communication
Revitalized friendship
A better understanding of your partner
Healthier methods of conflict management
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): Are you and your partner feeling stuck in a dysfunctional pattern and struggling to communicate effectively? Emotionally Focused Therapy incorporates the role of adult attachment styles and personality and the parts they play in your relationship dynamic. With this approach, your therapist will partner beside you to identify the negative cycles in your relationship, explore your core attachment patterns, and guide you to express your needs and emotions to create deeper emotional connections to one another.
The goals of Emotionally Focused Therapy are to explore key emotions, create a positive shift in the ways you and your partner interact with each other, and create a secure bond that cultivates deeper understanding. Couples who build this strong emotional connection become even stronger after experiencing conflict, and as a result approach conflict head on.
