Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurotype characterized by an interest-based nervous system and difficulty shifting attention, which can impact various aspects of life, including academic performance, work performance, relationships, and self-esteem. ADHD is a genetic neurotype and does not need or have a cure. The struggles of ADHD are often caused by society not being made for a neurodivergent brain, rather than ADHD being a deficit in and of itself. Just the name, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is problematic and inaccurate for a condition marked by hyperfocus and, less frequently, by outward hyperactivity. The name also ignores the combination of strengths, advantages, and challenges that accompany identification with this neurotype. Regardless, ADHD folks can still benefit from different strategies to adjust their lifestyle to better suit their neurotype. Common symptoms of ADHD are:

  • Struggling to pay attention to details

  • Trouble meeting deadlines

  • Cluttered home and workspace

  • Difficulty making decisions

  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed

  • Trouble finishing tasks and assignments

  • Poor time management and conception of time

  • Hyperfocusing on one task for long periods of time

  • Impulsivity

  • Difficulty following instructions

  • Perfectionistic tendencies

A person may be struggling with some or all of these symptoms, but getting the proper support is crucial for managing symptoms and thriving in your day to day routine. Psychotherapy can be an essential part of managing ADHD, especially for individuals who prefer non-medication approaches or those who want to supplement their medication treatment for optimal symptom management. Psychotherapy for ADHD aims to help individuals develop coping strategies, improve executive functioning, and address any co-occurring mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.

ADHD in women is frequently overlooked due to the difference of how symptoms present in men and women. Women who identify with ADHD often experience internal challenges that are not easily noticeable such as difficulty concentrating, procrastination, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, and forgetfulness. Women with unmanaged ADHD are at a higher risk of mental health and physical health problems than neurotypical women. Unmanaged ADHD can lead to further distress including depression, anxiety, low self confidence , difficulty in relationships,  and increased substance use.
